Performance Health is a company that makes medical and physical therapy supplies. It is based in Illinois, United States. The company was formed when two other companies joined together: Performance Health Inc, which began in Export, Pennsylvania, and Hygenic Corporation, which began in Akron, Ohio. The company creates and provides products for healthcare, including mobility and physical therapy equipment, diagnostic tools, and pain relief items.
History
Hygenic Corporation was established in 1925 by Walter P. Keith. The company created the Thera-Band, Dyna-Band, Parabath, and Hygenic products.
In 2006, Hygenic purchased Performance Health Inc., a company based in Export, Pennsylvania, which produces the Biofreeze topical analgesic and the Prossage warming massage ointment.
Hygenic has been bought and sold multiple times by private equity firms.
In 2016, Hygenic/Performance Health was acquired by Patterson Medical. The company’s headquarters was relocated to Warrenville, Illinois, but its facilities in Akron, Ohio, and Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, remained in use.
In 2018, the National Basketball Association (NBA)’s Portland Trail Blazers chose Biofreeze as their jersey patch sponsor.
In 2021, the Biofreeze and TheraPearl brands were sold to the English consumer goods company Reckitt.
