Romeo Montague (Italian: Romeo Montecchi [roˈmɛːo monˈtekki]) is the main male character in William Shakespeare's tragedy Romeo and Juliet. He is the son of Lord Montague and Lady Montague. Romeo secretly loves and marries Juliet, a member of the rival family, the House of Capulet, with the help of a priest named Friar Laurence.

After Romeo was banished for killing Juliet's cousin, Tybalt, in a fight, Friar Laurence gave Juliet a sleeping potion that made her appear dead for 42 hours. He also sent a letter to Romeo, but the letter never reached him. Romeo learned falsely that Juliet was dead and took his own life. Later, Juliet awoke to find Romeo dead and also took her own life.

The story of Romeo has roots in an ancient tale about Pyramus, who appears in Ovid's Metamorphoses. The first modern version of the story was Mariotto in the 33rd story of Masuccio Salernitano's Il Novellino (1476). This story was later adapted in 1524 by Luigi da Porto as Giulietta e Romeo, which was published after his death in 1531. Da Porto named the character Romeo Montecchi, and the story is very similar to Shakespeare's version. Since no 16th-century English translation of Giulietta e Romeo is known, Shakespeare's main source is believed to be Arthur Brooke's English verse translation of a French version of a 1554 adaptation by Matteo Bandello. Although Salernitano and da Porto claimed their stories were based on real events, there is little evidence to support this.

Romeo, like Juliet, is an only child. He is one of the most important characters in the play and appears throughout the story. His role as a passionate lover has made the word "Romeo" a synonym for a devoted male lover in many languages.

Origins

The earliest story similar to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is Ephesiaca by Xenophon of Ephesus, which features a main character named Habrocomes. The character of Romeo is also similar to Pyramus in Ovid's Metamorphoses, a young man who cannot be with the woman he loves because of a long-standing family dispute. Pyramus later dies when he mistakenly believes she is dead. While it is not certain that Shakespeare directly copied Ovid's story, it probably influenced Italian writers who greatly shaped Shakespeare's work. The two most likely sources Shakespeare used were Brooke's translation of da Porto's story and William Painter's The goodly historye of the true, and constant Love between Romeo and Juliet.
