Morrice is a village in Shiawassee County, Michigan. According to the 2020 census, the population was 949. The village is part of Perry Township. The center of population for the state of Michigan is near Morrice.
History
The village is named after William Morrice, an early settler from Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He moved to the area in 1837, where the village later developed.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.38 square miles (3.57 km ), of which 1.30 square miles (3.37 km ) is land, and 0.08 square miles (0.21 km ) (5.80%) is water.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, the village had 927 people, 367 households, and 239 families. The population density was 713.1 people per square mile (275.3 per square kilometer). There were 404 housing units, with an average density of 310.8 per square mile (120.0 per square kilometer). The racial makeup of the village included 97.0% White, 0.1% African American, 0.6% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino individuals made up 1.6% of the population.
There were 367 households, with 37.6% having children under 18 living with them. Of these households, 46.3% were married couples, 12.0% had a female householder without a husband, 6.8% had a male householder without a wife, and 34.9% were non-families. Thirty percent of all households included only one person, and 13.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.53 people, and the average family size was 3.12 people.
The median age in the village was 32.6 years. Twenty-eight point seven percent of residents were under 18, 8.3% were between 18 and 24, 30.6% were between 25 and 44, 20.1% were between 45 and 64, and 12.4% were 65 or older. The gender distribution was 50.8% male and 49.2% female.
As of the 2000 census, the village had 882 people, 316 households, and 232 families. The population density was 837.4 people per square mile (323.3 per square kilometer). There were 348 housing units, with an average density of 330.4 per square mile (127.6 per square kilometer). The racial makeup included 95.58% White, 0.68% African American, 0.68% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.57% from other races, and 2.15% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino individuals made up 1.70% of the population.
There were 316 households, with 42.4% having children under 18 living with them. Of these households, 55.7% were married couples, 11.7% had a female householder without a husband, and 26.3% were non-families. Nineteen point three percent of all households included only one person, and 6.3% had someone living alone who was 65 or older. The average household size was 2.79 people, and the average family size was 3.20 people.
The population was spread across age groups: 32.2% under 18, 9.0% between 18 and 24, 35.0% between 25 and 44, 17.7% between 45 and 64, and 6.1% who were 65 or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females, there were 100.5 males. For every 100 females aged 18 or older, there were 96.1 males.
The median household income was $40,417, and the median family income was $42,000. Males had a median income of $34,886, while females had a median income of $24,196.
