Geography

Lenox Township is located in northeastern Macomb County and is bordered by St. Clair Township to the east. The city of Richmond lies to the northeast of the township, and the village of New Haven is to the south. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the township covers a total area of 38.9 square miles (101 km), with 0.2 square miles (0.5 km), or 0.43%, consisting of water.

Lenox Township is flat and mostly rural, featuring farmland, wetlands, and some areas with trees. While much of the land remains undeveloped, development is increasing due to population growth in nearby southern townships. This has led to more buildings along important roads such as 26 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue. Efforts to preserve land, such as the Wetzel State Recreation Area, have also taken place throughout the township.

Demographics

As of the 2000 census, the township had 8,433 people, 2,510 households, and 1,945 families. The population density was 217.2 people per square mile (83.9 per square kilometer). There were 2,646 housing units, with an average density of 68.1 per square mile (26.3 per square kilometer). The racial composition of the township was 79.00% White, 16.54% African American, 0.74% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.68% from other races, and 2.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people made up 2.83% of the population.

Out of 2,510 households, 39.3% had children under 18 living with them, 59.1% were married couples, 12.9% had a female householder without a husband present, and 22.5% were non-families. Eighteen percent of all households included only one person, and 5.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.83 people, and the average family size was 3.19 people.

The population was spread across age groups: 24.8% were under 18, 8.4% were 18 to 24, 37.9% were 25 to 44, 21.7% were 45 to 64, and 7.2% were 65 or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 134.1 males. For every 100 females aged 18 and older, there were 147.2 males.

The median income for a household was $50,659, and the median income for a family was $54,605. Males had a median income of $43,475, while females had a median income of $27,582. The average income per person was $18,800. About 6.2% of families and 10.1% of the population lived below the poverty line. This included 10.7% of those under 18 and 11.0% of those 65 or older.
