Gladwin began in 1875 during a time when Michigan's timber industry was growing rapidly. The city was first called Cedar because it was located on the Cedar River. However, another town in Michigan also had the name Cedar, so the city was renamed after the county. The first church in Gladwin was a Methodist church built on March 31, 1878. In the fall of 1878, Isaac Hanna constructed the first schoolhouse, which was later replaced by a four-room schoolhouse in 1883. Gladwin officially became a village in 1885.
