History
During the summer of 1914, a group of Chicago artists and writers, including Sherwood Anderson and Ben Hecht, stayed at "Camp's Cottages" (owned by Eli Camp) on the Union Pier beach. Local people were upset by what they saw as strange behavior at "The Nudist Club," especially after two men from the area left their wives for women who were staying at Camp's Cottages. The local residents made the vacationers feel uncomfortable enough that they did not return the following year.
After World War II ended, many Lithuanian immigrants began living in Union Pier. Although few Lithuanian-Americans live there today, several Lithuanian facilities still exist.
