Communities

There are five unincorporated communities in the Township:

  • Avalon Beach is located on River Road and M-29. Its coordinates are latitude 42°41′20″N and longitude 82°30′30″W (or 42.68889°N, 82.50833°W). The elevation is 584 feet.
  • Broadbridge Station is located at the intersection of River Road and Broadbridge Road. Its coordinates are latitude 42°40′43″N and longitude 82°30′43″W (or 42.67861°N, 82.51194°W). The elevation is 581 feet or 177 meters.
  • Cherry Beach is located at the intersection of River Road and Little Avenue. Its coordinates are latitude 42°41′05″N and longitude 82°30′35″W (or 42.68472°N, 82.50972°W).
  • Martindale Beach is located at the intersection of River Road and Paradise Road, south of Marine City. Its coordinates are latitude 42°41′29″N and longitude 82°30′27″W (or 42.69139°N, 82.50750°W). The elevation is 581 feet or 177 meters.
  • Roberts Landing is located at the intersection of River Road and Roberts Road. Its coordinates are latitude 42°39′35″N and longitude 82°30′57″W (or 42.65972°N, 82.51583°W). The elevation is 584 feet or 178 meters.

History

Cottrellville was founded in 1822. A section of the general history mentions that the town was organized as early as 1822, with A. Hemminger serving as Supervisor. The same history lists the names of early settlers, including the Cotterals (Cottrells), Wards, Browns, and others. The land gradually rises from the river and is fertile, making it one of the richest agricultural areas in the county. The marsh near the river is the only area that is not suitable for farming, though it can still be cultivated. Marine City and Roberts' Landing are the only populated areas in the township. The population in 1845 was 727; in 1854, 1,442; in 1864, 1,930; in 1870, 2,371; and in 1880, 2,904. The total value of property in the area is $600,000; the township covers 13,011 acres, and the number of children of school age is.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 22.4 square miles (58 km²). Out of this, 21.2 square miles (55 km²) is land, and 1.2 square miles (3.1 km²), which is 5.27%, is water.

Demographics

According to the 2000 census, the township had a population of 3,814 people, 1,384 households, and 1,055 families. The population density was 180.0 people per square mile (69.5 per square kilometer). There were 1,497 housing units, with an average density of 70.6 units per square mile (27.3 per square kilometer). The racial and ethnic makeup of the township included 98.69% White, 0.08% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, and 0.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino individuals of any race made up 0.76% of the population.

Of the 1,384 households, 35.9% included children under 18 years old. Sixty-three percent were married couples living together, 8.8% had a female householder without a husband, and 23.7% were non-families. Nineteen point four percent of households consisted of individuals, and 7.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.75 people, and the average family size was 3.16 people.

The population was distributed as follows: 27.5% were under 18 years old, 7.5% were between 18 and 24 years old, 30.6% were between 25 and 44 years old, 23.9% were between 45 and 64 years old, and 10.5% were 65 years or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 101.8 males. For every 100 females aged 18 or older, there were 99.1 males.

The median household income was $47,396, and the median family income was $53,750. Males had a median income of $42,418, while females had a median income of $29,600. The average income per person in the township was $24,510. Approximately 2.5% of families and 2.6% of the population lived below the poverty line. This included 1.4% of individuals under 18 years old and 6.6% of individuals 65 years or older.
