Biography

Codd was born on December 7, 1869, in Detroit, Michigan. He was the son of George C. Codd and Eunice Lawrence. His father had a long history of public service. He worked as the postmaster of Detroit, sheriff of Wayne County, and a member of the Detroit City Council.

The younger Codd attended public schools in Detroit. He graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1891 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. While at the university, he played baseball for the Michigan Wolverines as a pitcher from 1888 to 1892. He served as the captain of the Michigan baseball team for four years in a row from 1888 to 1891.

After graduating, Codd studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1892 and began practicing law in Detroit in 1893.

Codd first worked at the law firm of Griffin, Warner, and Hunt. He served as assistant city attorney from 1894 to 1897. Later, he became a partner in the firm of Warner, Codd, and Warner with Carlos E. and Williard E. Warner. This partnership ended in 1901 after Carlos’s death. After that, Codd started his own law firm.

Codd married Kathleen Warner, the daughter of Carlos E. Warner, in 1894. The couple had three children: John W., George C., and Kathleen.

Politics

George P. Codd was a member of the local government board from 1902 to 1904. He was elected Mayor of Detroit and served from 1905 to 1906. However, his support for an agreement on transportation costs for the Detroit Street Railway caused people to lose trust in him, and he was not re-elected. He attended the 1908 Republican National Convention as a delegate. In 1910 and 1911, he was a member of the University of Michigan’s board of regents. From 1911 to 1921, he worked as a circuit judge in Wayne County’s 3rd Circuit.

In 1921, Codd was elected as a Republican representative from Michigan’s 1st congressional district to the 67th United States Congress. He served in this role from March 4, 1921, to March 3, 1923. In 1922, he chose not to seek re-election and returned to practicing law.

In 1924, Codd was elected again as a circuit judge in Wayne County and held this position until his death on February 26, 1927. He was buried in Elmwood Cemetery.
