Bruce Lorne Campbell was born on June 22, 1958. He is an American actor and filmmaker. He played the role of Ash Williams in Sam Raimi's Evil Dead horror movie series. He also appeared in several popular movies among certain groups, including Crimewave (1985), Maniac Cop (1988), Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat (1989), and Bubba Ho-Tep (2002).
Campbell had leading roles in the television series The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. (1993–1994) and Jack of All Trades (2000). He also appeared in many episodes as Autolycus, King of Thieves, in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (1995–1999) and Xena: Warrior Princess (1995–1999). He played the character Sam Axe in the USA Network series Burn Notice (2007–2013) and returned to play Ash Williams in the Starz series Ash vs. Evil Dead (2015–2018).
Campbell directed, produced, and acted in the documentaries Fanalysis (2002) and A Community Speaks (2004). He helped write, direct, produce, and act in the movie Man with the Screaming Brain (2005). He also directed, produced, and acted in a parody of his career titled My Name Is Bruce (2007).
Campbell has worked frequently with Sam Raimi, Ted Raimi, Josh Becker, and Scott Spiegel.
Early life
Bruce Lorne Campbell was born on June 22, 1958, in Royal Oak, Michigan. His parents were Charles Newton Campbell, who worked in advertising and taught at a college, and Joanne Louise Pickens, who took care of the home. Bruce has an older brother named Don and an older half-brother named Michael. His father also worked as an actor and director in local theater. As a teenager, Bruce began acting and making short films with friends using a special type of film called Super 8. While attending Wylie E. Groves High School, he met Sam Raimi, who later became a filmmaker. The two became close friends and worked together on projects. Bruce went to Western Michigan University and continued to pursue a career in acting.
Career
Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi worked together on a 30-minute Super 8 version of the first Evil Dead movie, called Within the Woods (1979). This version was made to help attract investors. Later, Campbell and Raimi worked with family and friends to create The Evil Dead (1981). Campbell played the main character, Ash Williams, and also helped produce the movie, earning a co-executive producer credit. Raimi wrote, directed, and edited the film, while Rob Tapert was the producer. After horror writer Stephen King supported the movie, it began to gain attention. Four years after its release, it became the most popular movie in the UK. It was then shown in the United States, leading to the sequels Evil Dead II (1987) and Army of Darkness (1992).
Campbell also appeared as Ash Williams in the Marvel Zombies comic series. He was in five comics from the Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness series. In these stories, Ash fights with Marvel heroes against zombies (called deadites) while searching for the Necronomicon, a book of the dead.
Campbell acted in other movies directed by Raimi, including the Spider-Man films. He also appeared in Darkman and The Quick and the Dead, though he had no screen time in the latter’s theatrical version. In March 2022, he was announced to have a small role in Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Campbell often plays unusual characters, such as Elvis Presley in Bubba Ho-Tep. He also acted in Maniac Cop and Maniac Cop 2, and made fun of his own career in his film My Name is Bruce.
Other movies he has been in include The Hudsucker Proxy, Congo, McHale’s Navy, Escape from L.A., The Majestic, and Sky High.
Campbell voiced a character in the 2009 animated movie Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and had a supporting voice role in Cars 2.
He helped produce the 2013 remake of The Evil Dead, along with Raimi and Rob Tapert. He appeared in a post-credits scene and was expected to return for Army of Darkness 2. In 2023, a band called Psychostick released a song titled “Bruce Campbell” that honored his roles.
Campbell worked as an executive producer for Evil Dead Rise (2023), Evil Dead Burn (2026), and Evil Dead Wrath (TBA).
In August 2025, Campbell talked to The Horror Zine about a new movie he directed and produced with his wife, Ida, called Ernie & Emma. The film follows a man on a road trip with his late wife’s ashes. He stars as the main character, Ernie. The movie’s trailer was released on YouTube on February 4, 2026, and it premiered on February 14 at the Holly Theatre in Oregon.
Campbell has appeared in many TV shows. He played a lawyer turned bounty hunter in The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr., a science fiction western. He also had a recurring role as “Bill Church Jr.” in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.
From 1996 to 1997, he was a guest star on Ellen, playing Ed Billik. He also acted in Jack of All Trades, a show set in 1801 France, and was a co-executive producer.
Campbell played a thief named Autolycus in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess. He reunited with producer Rob Tapert and played Tapert in two episodes of Hercules. He also directed episodes of Hercules and Xena.
He played a race car driver named Hank Cooper in a Disney TV remake of The Love Bug.
Campbell had a praised role as a detective in a Homicide: Life on the Street episode and played a demon in a The X-Files episode. He also appeared as Agent Jackman in Charmed and as a police officer in American Gothic.
In Burn Notice, he played Sam Axe, a former Navy SEAL who works as a private investigator. A prequel about Sam’s Navy career was released in 2011.
In 2014, Campbell played Santa Claus in The Librarians and portrayed Ronald Reagan in Fargo. He later returned as Ash Williams in Ash vs Evil Dead, a TV series that started in 2015.
In 2019, Campbell became the host and executive producer of a new version of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! on the Travel Channel.
Campbell has voiced characters in video games, including Ash Williams in Evil Dead: Hail to the King, Evil Dead: A Fistful of Boomstick, and others. He also voiced characters in Spider-Man, Pitfall 3D, and Cars 2. He provided the voice of Jake Logan in Tachyon: The Fringe and Jake Burton in Broken Helix. He also voiced Mayor Shelbourne in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Rod “Torque” Redline in Cars 2.
He has also voiced characters in games like Tome: Immortal Arena and provided motion capture for other projects.
Personal life
Campbell married Christine Deveau in 1983. They had two children before divorcing in 1989. He met costume designer Ida Gearon while working on Mindwarp. They married in 1991. They live in Jacksonville, Oregon.
Campbell is an ordained minister who has performed marriage ceremonies. He was raised in a Christian Science household. However, since becoming an adult, he has searched for a personal way of believing. He prefers to describe himself as a "citizen of the world" rather than identifying with any religious group.
Campbell holds the title of Kentucky Colonel.
On March 2, 2026, Campbell shared on social media that he was diagnosed with "a type of cancer that can be treated but not cured."
